IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM (NORTH) and THE LOWRY EXHIBITION CENTRE

Salford Quays Manchester

‘The Imperial War Museum (North)’

The Greater Elland Historical Society Annual trip took place on Saturday 11th June 2011 when 44 Members, Family and Friends visited the Imperial War Museum and The Lowry Exhibition Centre at Salford situated on either side of the Manchester Ship canal. The coach party left Elland at 9 am and arrived in Salford at 10 am for a pre-booked ‘Welcome meeting’ by staff at the Imperial War Museum before spending the day walking around the exhibits and relics of War (some quite harrowing) on show in the stunning designer made purpose built museum building. Most of the party took the trip to the viewing platform high up in the ‘Air Shard’ to take in some of the finest views of Manchester anywhere in the city. With hourly film shows projected onto the Museum walls in surround sound and vision with special exhibitions and a superb restaurant in the ‘Water Shard’ the Imperial War Museum proved to be a popular choice with our members.

‘The Lowry’

After Lunch many crossed the bridge to ‘The Lowry’ where in the L.S.Lowry gallery, members were enthralled by the collection of original ‘Lowry’ paintings featuring his famous ‘Matchstalkmen and Matchstalk cats and dogs’ painted in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s in and around the Salford Docks. There were other smaller exhibitions in the centre and a few shops and cafes along the ‘Waterside’ to while away the last few moments before the return journey at 5-15pm where prizes of a book and a bottle of wine were won by members in a prize draw to round off what proved to be a very enjoyable day and a very successful Annual trip.
