THE ALBERT RINDER MEMORIAL WALK PART 2
SUNDAY 26th JUNE 2011
‘Albert Rinder’
The 2nd annual walk in memory of our late President Mr Albert Rinder took place in scorching sunshine for the second year running led by ex-President, Writer and Life Member Mr Brian Hargreaves supported by 16 members of the society and one dog who met at Elland bridge at 2 o’clock.
‘Brian Hargreaves’
Brians knowledge of local History kept the group enthralled throughout the 90 minute trek around the towns most famous landmarks and places of interest such as Elland bridge, the Britannia Building, the site of Ely Garnetts Mill and the Harold savage Hall and Liberal Club building before crossing Briggate towards the Joshua Hemingway Memorial and the Town Hall.
Brian showed us the Old Elland Stocks that once stood outside Elland Gaol which now stand somewhat sadly in the garden at the Council Offices before taking us along Southgate via Timber Street to Northgate and our jewel in the crown the Church of St.Mary the Virgin and the end of the walk. Richard Dyson took us to see his Great Great Great Grandmothers grave and the peculiar inscription on the headstone (go to local stories/unusual headstones) before we finished a superb afternoon at the grave of Lucy Hamerton the writer of ‘Olde Eland’ in 1901.
Once again the event was well supported. Brian received a round of applause from members and a vote of thanks from Mrs Brenda Holbrook for all the hard work he put in to making this an interesting and enlightening experience for all who attended.
